Where did the Easter Basket Concept Come From
The Easter holiday is the result of a combination of several different religions and beliefs. The history or tradition linked with the Easter Basket also follows the same lineage. Some are related to Judeo Christian culture, while some are originated from antediluvian pagan customs.
Vernal or spring equinox was a very important time for the ancient people, as it represented the time when the day and night are equal in length. It was of great significance to the ancient people as it indicated that the harsh winter was over and the spring has arrived. Spring was viewed as a time of rebirth and renewal. So they used to pray to different Gods in the hope of getting their blessing for fertile land as their life was greatly based on livestock and crops.
Cultures of the Middle East like the Hebrews, Babylonians, Arabs and Assyrians had a tradition of going to their temples with the first seed plant of their cultivation to get a getting blessing, so that their yield is good. Easter occurs on the first Sunday after the first full moon of the spring equinox. This indicates the farmer to plant their plant seeds.
Easter Baskets are greatly linked with modern Christian tradition. Easter, to the Christians, means resurrection of the Christ. During the season of Lent, the Christians believe that one should stop eating certain foods and fast until the Easter is over. This includes giving up of eggs, dairy products and meats. The tradition of having an Easter supper marks the end of Lenten fast. In ancient times, this large feast was taken to the church in big baskets. From then this tradition of the Easter Basket continues till today. The clergy used to bless this special basket, as it was done when the ancient Hebrews had the firs seedling bless at the temples.
So the tradition of the Easter Basket that we observe with glee is descended from belief and culture that dates back thousands of years ago.
