Valentines Day

Every year on Feburary 14th lovers the world over celebrate Valentines day. This Holiday for sweetheart is forever remenbered by giving and receiving gifts, such as candy, flowers, cards and even jewelry. Valentine’s Day is that very special time of the year when red and pink colored heart decorations will adorn stores  schools and offices. People will always send Valentine cards with heartfelt love and fondness. Valentine’s Day lore does suggests that this special lovers’ holiday first came about as a tribute to St Valentine. His commitment to love resulted in a 5 th century Bishop called Valentine, who was living in rome, being beheaded for love.

The true life story of Valentine resembles a Greek tragedy. He served during the reign of Roman Emperor Claudius, who believed that all married soldiers were unsuitable for military duty, and he banned marriage. Valentine, a true love activist at heart, defied his Emperor and then embarked on a crusade of conducting secret marriages. Upon discovering Valentines subversion Cladius had him jailed.
While he was in jail, he fell deeply inlove with a blind woman who was the daughter of a jail warden. In this horrible time, Valentine’s love for her gave here the gift of sight. It is believed that her blindness was healed by his love. Valentines execution was ordered by Claudius, when he discovered this. Before the death sentence was carried out, Valentine wrote a farewell message to his beloved, which he ended with the inscription, “from your Valentine.” Years later by official Church decree, Valentine was named the Patron Saint of Love.
