Christmas Lights Have a History in Holiday Decorating

Without a doubt, colorful Christmas decorations seen everywhere from houses to malls, tends to put people in a festive holiday mood.

Holiday traditions have interesting histories, even though most people know very little about those we celebrate. Our tradition of the Christmas tree first began when the Germans took evergreens from the forests to use as decorative trees in their homes. Before there was electricity, it was tradition to use candles on the Christmas tree in order to light it up.

Electric Christmas lights were introduced in the late 1800’s, as this was the time when electricity had become common in many households. These new lights revolutionized the way people decorate for Christmas. Christmas lights aren’t the only thing that has evolved. Artificial Christmas garlands have become more popular by many year after year. Many homes are displaying LED prelit Christmas trees which are far more efficient than their predecessors and signify the latest breakthroughs in holiday décor today.

As a beautiful yet meaningful addition, it is common to place a star or angel at the top of the Christmas tree. In most cases the true meaning of Christmas is shown in these ornaments. An angel told shepherds about Baby Jesus being in a stable in Bethlehem, which is why we often see angels topping Christmas trees.

It’s almost mind boggling to think of today’s variety of colors, styles, and lighting themes for holiday decorating.  Strings, icicles, and rope lights are very popular kinds of lighting to decorate with  for the holiday. The lights these days are computerized and can do a multitude of different light patterns. Christmas lights have changed a lot since the 1800s and continue to promote the true meaning of Christmas year after year.
